Tevez and Mascherano to West Ham? CONFIRMED!

Posted by Sports Snob on August 31, 2006

tevez.jpg
No, its not April 1st. A statement on Carlos Tevez’s personal website says that Tevez along with his team-mate Javier Mascherano, have a signed a contract to play for West Ham United of England.

There is no update on the West Ham United website. Maybe this is just an elaborate prank but if this is true it will have to be the mother of all transfer coups. Even bigger than Luis Figo to Real Madrid.

Sportinglife says that the two of them are joining on a season long loan deal. This does make sense as Tevez publicly accepted that he hates life in Brazil (where he plays for Corinthians). The pair’s rights are owned by Media Sports Investment, a British-based company with financial involvement in Corinthians. MSI were linked with a takeover of the Hammers last season.

More updates later.

Updated-

It is TRUE! We have all been expecting a loan deal but this is permanent. Don’t think that counts for much as I must say this whole deal smells of dirty Russian money. Where did West Ham get ALL That money from? How much did they spend on these guys?

But who cares if you are a West Ham fan! :D Will be interesting to watch what pans out through the season. This will undoubtedly make West Ham much stronger in Europe but whether the Hammers will actually challenge for a top 3 4 finish in the premiership will obviously depend on how fast these guys adapt to the league. (And South Americans are notorious for not adapting to the premiership- don’t start throwing the name of the odd exception at me!)

But my god- this has to be the biggest transfer coup in history. Period. Unless, Ronaldinho is convinced to move to Bolton by Sam!

Round 1: Nadal vs Philippoussis and the winner is…

Posted by Sports Snob on August 30, 2006

A seed is down, the oldest grandslam winner in the draw is through, the Swiss miss is making a comeback and the first video challenge of grandslam tennis: The US Open promises to bring more excitement… and what a Round 1 match lined up: Nadal against Philippoussis.

The Aussie along with that maddening Russian, Safin, is probably the biggest waste of talent among current players. The big serve, booming ground strokes can do nothing if the player isn’t fit and on court! Philippoussis, the Greek Australian has suffered this for most part fo his career. And if that isn’t frustrating enough, he turns up at matches with his game in the locker room. He will hit the best shots in the book one day and the next day you will find him playing like a man with both feet in one shoe. He has shown us occasionally what he is capable of: Wimbledon finals but tennis at the highest level is about more consistency and sadly for us all, he has failed.

Nadal would do well to not take Philippoussis lightly. On his day he can beat the best and make them look like fools. At one point, I thought he might win The Championships atleast once but then there was Sampras and then Federer and our man was always out injured in action.
Another unrequited talent…

Video Challenge

The challenge thing is a good idea. The fans get to see where the ball went and the players are left with no reason to complain. i just hope it is used in a measured fashion. With most players looking to hit the lines, close calls are going to be there more and more frequently and we shouldn’t have play being interrupted every two points. I would like to know what the linesmen and chair umpires think…

Predictions

Federer beats Nadal in the finals. The other semi-finalists I would like to predict but without seeing that chart, I don’t want to make silly errors like naming a person who would play Federer in the Quarters. But if he doesn’t meet either of these guys, I predict Roddick and the final choice is probably Baghdatis, Nalbandian or Tursunov.

Henin triumphs. The semi-finalists barring the draw thing would be Mauresmo, Clijsters and let me go with either Sharapova or Ivanovic for the final spot.

Double Standards in Cricket

Posted by Sports Snob on August 29, 2006

Is a bowler who scratches the ball to improve reverse swing anymore of a cheat than a bowler who tries to improve the shine to aid normal swing. Is he more of a cheat than a batsman who stands his ground when he knows he has hit the ball?

This are the questions that former England pacer Angus Fraser asks in this article. Much like line and length during his playing career, Fraser has got this spot on.

From the article:

When Waqar and Wasim were ripping out Test sides with an array of unplayable in-swinging yorkers, the antennae of those on the receiving end suddenly perked up, and underhand tactics were deemed to be taking place. And it was the same last weekend when Alastair Cook was flummoxed by a similar style of delivery from the Pakistan seamer Umar Gul.

Yet in 2005, when Andrew Flintoff and Simon Jones were knocking over Australia’s Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist, barely an eyebrow was raised. The consensus was that England’s brave young boys had legitimately perfected this mysterious art and the ageing Aussies were not up to it.

As for the controversy itself- the ICC has let this issue drag on too far and Hair’s offer of resignation for money has added an entire new dimension to the story. Much like FIFA, the ICC has always been guilty of not releasing official information on time thereby resulting in needless gossip on part of pundits and journalists. Maybe management schools should now take the ICC as a case study of how NOT to deal with crisis. Or maybe they should just stick to FEMA

English Premier League: Weekend Review

Posted by Sports Snob on August 28, 2006

Result of the Weekend:

Manchester City 1-0 Arsenal

Arsene Wenger must be hoping that his side can put together a string of good performances after the 2-week break. Perfect example of the unpredictability of sport. City were coming in off a rotten run, nothing has been going right for them and Thatcher’s horrific elbow on Pedro Mendes did not help either. City rode their luck through the match and somehow got home with a 1-0 victory. Special menion for Nicky Weaver. Only god knows how this man is playing football after all the operations. In fact he is making first team appearences after close to three years.

Goal of the Weekend:

Daniel Agger’s absolute cracker against West Ham United.Supposedly the best defender to come out of Denmark since the glory of Euro 92.

Watch the goal here.

Verdict:

sfneng06.jpg

Early days but all the signs are pointing towards a very interesting season. The presence of Martin O Neill and a rejuvenated Aston Villa could make the season more interesting. With Randy Lerner ’s (What a name!) imminent take over of Villa, it will be interesting to see the players he signs before the transfer window closes.

FIBA World Championship 2006

Posted by Sports Snob on August 27, 2006

The World Championships has drawn greater viewership this year than in the past. This maybe due to the star studded roster of Team USA, but even they are wary of the threat posed by the international teams. A sentiment echoed by Jerry Colangelo, head of USA Basketball. ”We invented the game , we sent our players and our coaches out to teach the world and now they’re closing the gap,” Colangelo said. ”They got better and better, we didn’t take care of business and they knocked us off our perch.”. Team USA had finished 3rd in the 2004 Olympics, a disgrace considering that USA had Vince Carter, Allen Iverson and a swarm of other 20million $ per year athletes. Now they are back with a vengeance. They have been practising hard and are committed to winning the crown this year.

usa_lebron_james_s.jpg
Better Competition

Unlike the past, teams like Argentina (2004 Olympic Champions with Manu Ginobili) and Spain ( Pau Gasol and a stinging defense) have very strong squads and team USA has to be on top of their game to beat them. I would still put my money on the Americans to win it all this year with Argentina or Spain finshing second. These teams have strong fundamentals and play defense with passion. Explosive Offense can win a game but it takes strong defense to win a championship. These International teams have shown their talent in shooting the ball as well as in playing defense. The Americans have a physical advantage amongst all teams, something related to genetics I guess, but International teams are smart and have excellent coordination.

China has failed to amaze anyone so far into the competition, despite Yao Ming being the top scorer of the championship. Angola has shown a lot of promise. They have the heart but unfortunately not the talent to compete with the big guns.

ger_dirk_nowitzki_o-1.jpg
USA - Germany quarterfinals looks imminent and it would be a great match. To date Dirk Nowitzki has been a matchup problem to all teams, look for the zone defense against the Germans. France was shaping to be a strong contender until Tony Parker was injured in an exhibition game and had to be pulled out of the roster.

Look out for the finals and throw your predictions in here. At last basketball is having a world championship with competition.
My Picks: 1.USA 2.Argentina 3. Spain 4. Greece

US Open: The Streets of New York

Posted by Sports Snob on August 26, 2006

The US Open is all set to begin on Monday, the 28th. In an exhibition and sponsorship event, Federer and Nadal took it outside onto the streets. An event sponsored by Nike saw the biggest rivalry in tennis currently, being played out with a friendly exchange of strokes in New York.

federer_nad.jpg

“… Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, hit the streets of New York City – literally – playing a one-on-one exhibition Thursday on a make-shift court set up in front of the Golfsmith Golf and Tennis Store, located in mid-town Manhattan at 54th and Lexington.”

In other news, Ana Ivanovic won the women’s US Open Series, getting a shot at the $1 million jackpot at the US Open.

Spanish La Liga Predictions

Posted by Sports Snob on August 26, 2006

The season starts now:

With the curtain raiser to the Spanish La liga season now behind us, We can look forward to the new season in Spain with a few new contenders and changes from the previous season. Barcelona strolled to their second straight championship last time, also accumulating a horde of trophies and individual awards. But this time around liga has undergone a makeover and mostly in the Castillon region of Spain. Their two clubs- Real and Atletico- have invested heavily in players but their biggest signings have been that of their coaches. Having said that few would bet against a Barcelona especially after a particularly productive offseason, during which they had taken advantage of the bargain sale at Juventus. The new season has a familiar feeling but the fresh talent makes it very interesting for me, making it easily the best league in the world.

Now for at closer look at the la liga season:

joaquin_firofoto_g.jpg
4) Valencia: Valencia have spent big in the summer, welcoming Tavano and Morientes in what will be a talented frontline. They have recently snapped up the talented winger Joaquin from Betis. The problem remains in defence where they have lost Carboni and Aerelio and also have a very disgruntled Ayala to start with. Valencia have added Asier Del horno to make up for the losses but Pablo Aimar has jumped ship to Zaragoza in a total surprise.
Positives: Joaquin, Morientes, Manager Quique Flores and Tavano
Negatives: Defence and an aging goal keeper.
Star player for the season: David Villa

sergio-aguero-tribunedia.jpg

3) Atletico Madrid: I’m expecting big things from Atletico Madrid, mainly because they have signed La Liga’s most underrated coach in Javier Aguirre. He will be the one to watch along with latest Argentine import Sergio Aguero. And although I’m not a big fan of his, Fernando Torres could bag atleast 20 goals this year. What many dont know is that Atletico have the most solid defence in la liga. They have a player who could well be the best defender in the world in Luis Perea. They have added Pernea (scored 10 goals last year for Getafe) as a left back and collectively it is the best defence in la liga.

Positives: Sergio Aguero, Maxi Rodriguez, Luis Perea
Negatives: Midfield not the most creative
Star Player for the season: Sergio Aguero

cannavaro.jpg

2)Real Madrid: No club has undergone as big a transition as has Real Madrid. There has been a change in President, coaches and in half the starting lineup. New players in include Emerson and Cannavaro from Juventus and Diarra from Lyon. Also, they have got Van Nistelrooy from United. As we speak, Madrid are still trying to get Kaka to the Bernabeu. The galactico ethos has been abandoned for a more pragmatic approach and that is Capello’s USP. Dont expect the most fluent football, but expect better results from this new outfit.

Positives: Capello
Negatives: Fans(impatient), Raul(the powers that be wont wont him out though his performances merit that)
Star Player for the season: Ruud Van Nistelrooy

lionel-messi.jpg

1) Barcelona: In the offseason, The best got better. The Catalans have added Lillian Thuram and Gianluca Zambrotta- both steeled in the rigors of Italian football. The catalans may miss the finishing of Larsson, but the silky skills of Eidur Gudjohnsen may more than compensate. Pre-season form has been ominous, including the most attractive display of attacking football in years in the first half of the Gamper trophy against Bayern Munich (whom they thrashed 4-0). The sky is the limit for this team and at present no team in Europe can match them for flamboyance and productivity.

Positives: Rijkaard, Messi and Ronaldinho
Negatives: Eto’o (his outbursts would annoy even the most passionate cule)
Star Player for the season: Messi

Formula 1: The season so far

Posted by Sports Snob on August 25, 2006

a060513_ma_schumacher_alonso_v.JPG

Four Five races left in the calendar year and only eleven points (when the post was written, now ten) separate the leader(Fernando Alonso) and number two(Michael Schumacher) in the World Drivers Championship. Now that’s the sort of Formula One season that brings back the fans that abandoned the sport during the years of Michael Schumacher’s absolute domination. The reliability of Alonso and Renault pitted against a Ferrari resurgence and Michael Schumacher’s desperate need to win.

Two Horse Race:

The season began well in Bahrain with a tight finish for the first spot between Alonso and Michael after which Ferrari slipped in Malaysia and Australia. Thereafter it turned into a two-horse race as the two of them together won eleven of the thirteen races; Fisichella, in a rare drive surpassing his team mate in Malaysia and Button, winning for the first time on a wet track in Hungary, were the other two victors. In the other Ferrari car, Massa did a good job of helping Schumi along the way, taking valuable points off Alonso in a couple of races and managing (sometimes) to keep pace with his illustrious team mate. Fisichella, on the other hand, seemed largely uninterested in the ongoing season but for the one brilliant race in Malaysia and all the points he acquired can be attributed to Renault’s unfailing car -a sad declaration to make about a prodigiously talented driver who everyone expected would achieve much once he got an opportunity to handle a decent car.

Mclaren and Montoya

Mclaren were unchallenged as the third best car on track with Raikkonen occasionally beating his rotten luck and scoring some points. With Mclaren already having contracted Alonso for 2007, Montoya looked ready to quit F1 at the start of the season and most of his drives spoke of the same intent, until he finally did chose to leave F1 for NASCAR after causing a seven car pile-up at Indy- a “fitting” end to one of the more “exciting” drivers in the past few F1 seasons (read hasty dingus who too often pushed his car too far). In all seriousness, Montoya was one of the only things tolerable about F1 in the afore-mentioned Michael dominated years. He was not very consistent, but he fought hard and for every F1 fan, there will be many a brilliant Montoya maneuver, imprinted in your head forever.

Honda led the midfield pack, with a few good drives from Button and points from the practically invisible Barrichello, followed by BMW-Sauber and Toyota.

Bitter Jacques:

As always, F1 offers as much controversy and transfers as on track brilliance and this season was no different, with Toyota suddenly dropping sought after technical director, Mike Gascoyne, and Geoff Willis parting ways with Honda. Once again, Michael was universally berated for his disregard for rules and sportsmanship as he stalled in front of Alonso during Fernando’s final qualifying run at Monaco. He protested innocence of course but no one was really willing to believe him anymore and so he started from the pits, finishing fifth with a typically competent drive aided by a little luck. And of course, the latest of Jacques Villeneuve’s verbal attacks on Michael (there’s one every five minutes) - “He’s a racer - but a pure racer, nothing but a racer and, because of that, I think the day he hangs up his helmet people will just forget him.” Oh, and Schumi’s not a great human being and Senna played dirty tricks with greater style and will hence be remembered better than him. Really, Jacques! Even you ought to know that just sounds bitter. The man who won five continuous seasons, who battled the likes of Senna, Prost and Mansell to win his first world driver’s championship, who’s beaten Mika Hakkinen, who’s broken practically every record in the F1 books is NOT going to be forgotten. Jacques Villeneuve, proving once again that his prodigious talent deserves a better behaved vessel.

Predictions! :

alonso_schumacher_j_958061b.jpg

With a close fight at the top, both in the drivers and construction titles, numerous verbal battles, and even Michael, Kimi and Massa undecided as to where they’re driving next year (In Michael’s case, if…), everyone should do their best to catch the remaining of the season. Alonso will no doubt give it his best shot but I expect Michael and Ferrari to emerge triumphant, simply because their car has looked better since France, and also because Michael, though the oldest on the track, still remains the man with the greatest will to win…

Champions League Draw!

Posted by Sports Snob on August 24, 2006

barsachelsea.png

Group A: Barcelona, Chelsea, Werder Bremen, Levski Sofia
Group B: Inter Milan, Bayern Munich, Sporting Lisbon, Spartak Moscow

Group C: Liverpool, PSV Eindhoven, Bordeaux, Galatasaray
Group D: Valencia, Roma, Olympiakos, Shakhtar Donetsk

Group E: Real Madrid, Lyon, Steaua Bucharest, Dynamo Kiev
Group F: Manchester United, Celtic, Benfica, FC Copenhagen

Group G: Arsenal, FC Porto, CSKA Moscow, Hamburg
Group H: AC Milan, Lille,AEK Athens, Anderlecht

Barcelona V Chelsea

This is bloody sexy! Unlike Chelsea v Liverpool (which are usually snooze fests) you just cannot get enough of Chelsea vs Barcelona. Two great teams, two brilliant coaches and most importantly so many mouth watering match ups all over the pitch. Plus, with Shevchenko and Ballack in the Chelsea starting line up, things will get even better. Barca have significantly strengthened their defence through Zambrotta and Thurram. The only problem is probably the long over-drawn build up to the games.
Rijkaard V Mourinho

Rijkaard probably got the most important footballing lesson in his life when Chelsea scored those 3 quick goals against Barcelona in the at Stamford Bridge two years back. Rijkaard came back stronger and was a lot more pragmatic in his approach. Mixing defensive midfielders with flair players such as Messi and Ronaldinho. He came back last year to trump Mourinho and Barcelona were way better than Chelsea last year in every part of the field.

Arsenal might find it tough (just might!, before all you Arsneal fans get on my back) against Porto, Hamburg and Moscow. Hamburg finished third in the Bundesliga last year and Moscow were UEFA cup champions two years back ( plus, they are bankrolled by Roman Abrahamovich’s  Abramovich’s company)

Manchester United should go through with ease, but the Battle of Britain (Fergie V Strachan) will be fun. Benfica have lost their coach (Koeman) to PSV. But then Man Utd were expected to sail through their group last year as well. Copenhagen should be easy to beat but then they are the reason that Ajax aren’t here!

Verdict: Group stages are usually just a task to be done away with before the real show. Expect all the usual suspects to be around come the knock out stage.
Group to Watch: Group A. Werder Bremen are no push overs. Expect them to give both Barca and Chelsea a real fight. Levski Sofia will have two great match days! When the the Barca and Chelsea teams come into town.

English Football!

Posted by Sports Snob on August 24, 2006

What a day yesterday in England. Lots of action on and off the pitch.

Return of the Supersub!

solskjaer_ole_gunnar_mufc_profile_2005.jpg

First, Manchester United defeated Charlton, well the result was no big deal but Mr. Baby Face Ole Solsjkaer scored in the 90th minute. After three years of injuries and frustration, it looks like Ole is back and every United fan will be hoping that the Norwegian has two good years left in him.

Boro beat Chelsea (again)

72920.jpg

What a result for Boro last night! Defeating Chelsea 2-1 at home after getting beaten by newly promoted Reading last week. Aussie Viduka scored the winner in the 90th minute after Shevchenko scored for Chelsea and Pogatez equalized for Boro. I hope this is the start of a long and hard season for Chelsea (hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things!) Steve McClaren may have left but the fact is Boro are still proving as unpredictable as last year. Expect more of the same from Boro all season, will probably end up 10th or 11th.

Why am I making such a big deal out of this? Lets just face it - every Chelsea defeat is a RARE event! All the more reason to celebrate it. Especially when Lampard ends up like that! :)

Roy Keane to take over Sunderland

k12.jpg

It looks like Roy Keane is going to be named as the next manager of Sunderland. The Black Cats might have gotten themselves rid of Mick McCarthy but the club has lost five straight games under new manager-chairman Niall Quinn. Now, it looks like Quinn is set to name former Irish teammate as the new boss of the club. Roy Keane as a manager, now that’s got to be interesting! How will he treat players who don’t give 100 percent everytime. Will we have more hair-dryer and boot incidents? Expect a great deal more interest in the English Championship. Sunderland is going to become a fashionable club. Plus, they will now have a LOT of supporters in the far-east!
