Sania defeats Hingis!

Posted by Sports Snob on September 28, 2006

Sania Mirza has just defeated Martina Hingis in the second round of the Hanso Korea Open in Seoul. Mirza defeated Hingis 4-6 6-0 6-4 and avenged her defeat in last week’s Sunfeast Open in Calcutta. In Friday’s quarterfinal, Sania will face doubles specialist Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain.

sania_mirza.jpg

Hingis is now ranked number 8 in the world and this definitely has to be Sania’s biggest victory of her career. Sania’s career is now starting to resemble the perfect sine curve. Just when people were starting to write her off as a one-season wonder, she seems to have picked up her form and after a semifinal appearance in Calcutta looks set to progress far in the Korean Open.

This victory should do wonders to both her confidence and her ranking! We all know what Hingis is capable of and beating her can be no easy task. If Sania can keep herself injury-free for one or two years, she can possibly work towards becoming a real contender at the grand slams. (barring the French obviously)

It has to be said that the people at Sportsnob are huge fans of Sania for a number of reasons and hopefully she will give us a lot of things to write about!

Update:

Sania Mirza lost to Virgina Ruano Pascual 6-7 6-4 6-7 in the quarterfinals of the Korean Open. The match was bound to be tough. Pascual is a tough and experienced campaigner. Pity she couldnt go through. The fact that the third set went to a tie-breaker shows how close she got.

The Top 5 dunks of all time.

Posted by Sports Snob on September 25, 2006

This was by far, one of my toughest assignments. Dunking has changed over the years from its showy plain beginnings to becoming a form of art in the modern era. Just looking back at the past few decades, there has been a gradual change from power dunking to finesse. What you thought was impossible a few years ago, is reality now and only imagination stands between man and his elevation to stuff the ball into the hoop. Here are my top 5 NBA dunks

No 5

Rightly nicknamed ‘The Human Highlight film’, Dominique Wilkins personified the Windmill dunk. The raw power in each slam had the stadium rocking. It was only right that I did not pick one of his Windmills over the other. There was so little to choose in between them, that I had to thrown in a compilation of his Windmills at No 5.

Dr. J (Julius Erving) has to get the credit for changing the dunking world. Before he came into the scene, dunks were primarily from close to the basket by really tall players with absolutely zero entertainment value. Dr. J showed the world, the art of dunking. He was most famously known for this dunk at No 4. Dr J starts the break with a steal, drives on the left lane and cuts towards the basket, clutches the ball in one hand, swings it across his body and elevates over Michael Cooper of the Lakers for the jam.

What was Tracy McGrady thinking of. This play had fans going crazy. Free throw dunks were reserved for the dunk contest not by choice but by physical ability until this day. Not a single person has even dreamed of pulling off a free throw dunk during a game. At No 3, Tracy Mcgrady starts the break, shuffles his feet a few yards from the free throw line and takes off, soaring for the slam.

I really did not want to rank a dunk from the dunk contest here as it would change the ratings considerably. But this dunk was one of the most amazing dunks I had ever seen. Really doesnt matter when or where he did it but it was a masterpiece. The Mona Lisa of dunks and it belongs to His Airness, Michael Jordan. Jordan needs a 48 to tie and a 49 to win against his perennial dunk contest foe Dominique Wilkins. Although many people have dunked from the free throw line, this was something special. Micheal starts his run up from the end of the court, gradually gaining speed as it culminates with a smooth flowing figure taking off from the free throw line, double cluthcing in the air with his tongue out as cameras flash for the most famous picture of a dunk. It was God disguised as Micheal Jordan. Oh yeah and they gave Jordan a 50.

What can one say about this dunk. People talk about dunking on the defenders but actually going over them? And how many people could go over someone standing at 7 foot 2 inches. Well America’s Vince Carter can. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Vinsanity gets the steal at midcourt, gets a couple of short steps before he elevates over Frederic Weis of France and slams it over him. He actually takes off in front Weis and lands behind him. Weis did retire after the Olympics( I do feel sorry for him ) but on the bright side his name will always be synonymous with the best dunk.

P.S: Look out for James “Flight” White at this years dunk contest. He was drafted at No 31 by the Portland Trail Blazers. This guy can dunk from the free throw line and still have enough hangtime to put the ball between his legs while doing it.http://youtube.com/watch?v=pA4L-_Wic78

Letter to Greg.

Posted by Sports Snob on September 22, 2006

200510290005028011.jpg

Dear Greg,

I think you have done a great job so far. You have put together a young team with a lot of potential. You have got through a series of controversies and I think you have finally learnt that being outspoken and blunt is not the best thing to do in India. You have also learnt to shut up when it comes to the Ganguly issue. Sure, test series wins against England and Pakistan would have made things sweeter but nevertheless the team has made a lot of progress under you. But the time has come for some hard decisions and as things stand the Indian team going to the World Cup has a much better of winning then any Indian team that has taken part in previous editions.

1) Sort out the mental blocks in Sehwag and Pathan.

Two of our best match winners have been performing poorly for quite some time now. Nobody is doubting their abilities but they will have to turn it around. And fast. Sehwag has not been firing on any cylinder and a variety of reasons have made Pathan from a dependable swing bowler into a sunday-leaguer. True, Pathan’s batting has blossomed but he is in the team as a strike bowler first. We need Pathan the bowler a lot more than Pathan the batsman. And the drop in pace has been rather alarming. Maybe we will need a bowling coach (like Bruce Reid or Trevor Cooley) after the World Cup but as of now its up to you and Rahul.

2) Sort the batting order.

Lets face it, you have been lucky. The emergence of Dhoni has saved you a lot of trouble of fielding Dravid as the wicket keeper. As things stand, Dhoni would walk into any lineup in the world right now (barring Australia ofcourse). You have experimented quite a bit (more than probably necessary) but now its time to stop. People need a good run at fixed positions to the world cup. Is Dravid going to open? Are you going to go in with 5 batsmen with Pathan and Dhoni or a sixth batsman and four bowlers?. Start with the champions trophy

3) Draft Kumble back. NOW.

In fact I wrote about this quite extensively. Two spinners in the Carribean might seem a totally insane thing to do but just look at how part time spinners like Gayle and Samuels were effective earlier this year. if you are really interested- you could go here.

4) Develop the siege mentality-

The siege mentality could make a good side into a champion side. Look at Italy at the 2006 football world cup. With the Italian Corruption scandal making more headlines than the squad, the team stuck together, avoided the media, played their hearts out and emerged on top.

Besides, it has worked with the Indian team before. During the 2003 World Cup, the manner in which the Indian team rebounded after a thrashing at the hands of Australia and the subsequent criticism was in part due to the US Vs Them mentality. Even average blokes like Asish Nehra stepped up and fought hard (remember that 6 for 23 against England?) . This could just work. Hopefully, this will result in you guys coming home with the trophy.

Thanks,

Z

Scandal: The Beeb exposes graft in English Football.

Posted by Sports Snob on September 20, 2006

samallardyce_ml_g.jpg

Oh dear, Its another scandal that is sure to rock the foundation of the English game. Close on the heels of the famous fake Sheikh scandal that cost Erikkson his job and the calciopoli mess in Italy, a new sting conducted by the BBC’s flagship show Panaroma has exposed the corruption in the English game . Using a licensed agent to conduct the sting, the documentary showed several hidden camera videos of conversations between agents and coaches discussing payoffs for transfers. The man at the centre of this new expose is Fat Sam Allardyce. His complicity in the scandal was known well before the show aired after he made several equivocal comments in a bid to preempt the findings of the show. It did little to clear his name and the coach whose reputation had skyrocketed after his sensational work with Bolton wanderers is now on the move to vindicate himself. Fat Chance!

Fat Sam was also pivotal in sculpting the art of Long throw-ins. The same kind of football that made you switch channels and watch The Forresters in The Bold and the Beautiful but what he lacked in style he made up in efficiency. He has done wonders with the squad he had inherited but this comes as a hammer blow to his aspirations of becoming England Boss oneday. But on the other hand , as the letter of the law states he is innocent until proven otherwise.

However Sam does have company as several others have been implicated in the scandal. The others that found mention in Panaroma:-

The programme, which used an undercover reporter posing as an agent, also alleged that:

• Three agents named in the programme admitted giving bungs.

• Newcastle first-team coach Kevin Bond admitted he would consider discussing receiving payments from agents.

• Frank Arnesen, Chelsea’s director of youth football, offered Middlesbrough’s 15-year-old England youth star Nathan Porritt £150,000 over three years to move clubs.

• Liverpool also tried to tempt Porritt from Middlesbrough.

• Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp was involved in ‘tapping up’ a player.

For their part, those implicated have issued denials( Surprise, Surprise!).

Watch this space for updates.

La Liga: A review

Posted by Sports Snob on September 19, 2006

La liga had a full round of matches over the weekend and there were not many interesting results. The favorites prevailed on all occasions and it looks like Sevilla are posing a great threat to the crown after a well deserved 3-2 victory in their derby against Betis. Sevilla had Kanoute to thank for his brace and it puts them on top of a liga still very much in its infancy. Surely, the bubble will burst someday for Sevilla? Won’t it?

Barca, Madrid, Valencia and Deportivo all chalked up fine victories. Villareal on the other hand seem to be struggling. After the over achievement of last season, this one seems like a reality check for the tiny club.
villareal3.jpg

Here are the other results from an action packed weekend:

Zaragoza 2-0 Mallorca
Deportivo 2-0 Villarreal
Recreativo 0-1 Levante
R Madrid 2-0 R Sociedad
Sevilla 3-2 Betis
Athletic 1-4 Atlético
Valencia 2-0 Getafe
Racing 0-3 Barcelona
Osasuna 2-0 Nàstic
Espanyol 2-1 Celt

Result of the weekend:

The pick of the weekend results would be the coming of age of Javier Aguirre’s Atletico Madrid. Can’t deduce much from one showing but the team looked solid and seem ready for tougher challenges in the league.

Performer of the weekend: Freddie Kanoute(Sevilla)

kanoutebrazo3tn.jpg

He doesn’t look like the player who was third choice at Spurs. Kanoute has had a fantastic start to the season and looks an early season candidate for the Pichichi along with perennial favorite Samuel Eto’o and a rejuvenated Fernando Morientes.

Goal of the week: Joan Capdevilla(Deportivo La caruna vs Villareal)

Verdict:

The challengers didn’t stutter this weekend. But somethings gotta give next week when Barca play Valencia at the Nou Camp. Good Stuff in store!

Manchester United 0 - Arsenal 1

Posted by Sports Snob on September 18, 2006

wenger2-4121.jpg

A great win for the the gunners and well deserved i might add. IMO, Man Utd didn’t offer much and also looked happy with a draw. Arsenal on their part didn’t make heavy weather of the absence of Thierry Henry and Robin Van Persie and this vicotry sets up their season perfectly.

gilberto-275.jpg

The First half was electric with both sides creating openings. Arsenal had the better of the half with a penalty being awarded in their favor. However, Gilberto Silva scoffed the attempt and it was still nil nil. The second half was insipid and the only interesting portions were due to the defensive lapses of the Man Utd backline….that was until Cesc Fabregas produced some magic, albeit assisted by some slack defending by United. His perfectly weighted pass found Adebayor who calmly slotted the ball past Tomasz Kuszczak. Despite his ungainly stature, Adebayor does add an extra dimension to the Arsenal style. The last few minutes were frantic but the Gunners did enough to hang on to the lead.

Its back to the drawing board for the Red Devils and for Fergie in particular. He got his subsitutions wrong and his tactics were a bit conservative, a far cry from the swagger of the late 90’s. But it was all about the Gooners today and as much as the Red Devils might hate accepting it, Arsenal are Back!

Thierry Henry- The Swollen headed egomaniac.

Posted by Sports Snob on September 14, 2006

thierry-henry-france1.jpg

Not one footballer in the world gets under my skin as Thierry ‘Titi’ Henry. Yes, he is a big Tit. The prodigiously talented footballer is probably the biggest egotist you will find. Never too busy to toot his own horn, Henry more often than not likes to talk up his own game at the expense of his compatriots’. Arsenal fans would like mention the significant contribution he has made to their club, but why does a man, who represents a club and a generation of ‘joga bonita’ football behave in the most condescending and hypocritcal way. I don’t read too much into his celebrations, but his post match interviews often reek of arrogance and pettiness. If he isn’t making gratuitous comments about referees, he is whining about the fixture schedule and spouting several conspiracy theories about why the powers that be are against Arsenal. Yeah, right! This drivel Henry has been dishing out for years is not news worthy anymore. It doesn’t even strike us as out of character any longer.

Arse Fans are enraged when people say that Henry is (for want of a better word), A Choker. Well, he has scored a few goals but I have seen several occasions where he has let his team down in the final third of matches- In the Champions League and countless times for France. Zidane was the fall guy for Titi’s performances. ‘You need to keep Titi as the focus’ they say. But I do recall Titi having only a cursory influence during Zidane’s absence in 2002 WC.

The Famous Rant in Paris:

Z and I were watching the Champions League final together and for the first time we thought that Henry would make us eat our words. Three minutes later, He put paid to those thoughts. He may never play for Barcelona but he certainly did his bit for the Catalans. But the bone of contention is not so much his footballing skill, admirable as it is, but his unfailing ability to carp and whine. His post match rant after the Barca game still rings in my ear because it was shockingly unprofessional (”I didn’t see Ronaldinho or Eto’o today”) and sexist (”Only women go down”). What Titi conveniently overlooked was the fact that he had cost his side the top prize in club football. He had missed two gilt-edged chances in Regulation time. Oddly enough, a month later in the World Cup in a match between France and Spain, Titi fell to the ground holding his face, writhing in pain, when replays should that Puyol had made no contact with that area. Puyol denied ever hitting his face but Henry claimed innocence. Oui, zee replays are lying. This is what the person, who is the emblem of Arsenal FC is capable of. But I was happy in a way since it exposed him for what he is - a whingeing hypocrite.

Only time will tell if Henry can someday live up to his billing and win the top prize for HIS club . Or else, he will join the pantheon of greats to have never won the Champions League!

Spanish La liga- Week in review

Posted by Sports Snob on September 13, 2006

It was a weekend where the contenders got off to good starts. Barcelona, aided by a virtouso performance by Samuel Eto’o, won their match against a beleaguered Osasuna team. Osasuna look very frail this time around, they do miss the presence of ex-coach Javier Aguirre who defected to Atletico Madrid, a club with loftier ambitions. The 3-0 scoreline was well deserved and seeing Leo Messi run circles around defenders is an ominous sign for all the other challengers. Speaking of whom, Real Madrid finally turned on the style with a thumping 4-1 win and I must say, it bodes well for the league. Last year was a bit farcical. Even when Barcelona showed weakness, no other team looked like taking up the gauntlet. This season looks different already. Elsewhere, Aimar scored his first goal for Zaragoza in a three nil victory for his side against struggling Espanyol.

Result of the weekend:

118299.jpg

Atletico Madrid 0- 1 Valencia. It was the biggest game in spain in the weekend and Valencia cemented their desire to challenge for the crown with this well worked win at the Calderon. Torres was sent off in the match but Valencia did enough to earn this win. Although Jaqouin sat this one out, You can expect him to play a big role next week.

Performer of the weekend:Ruud Van Nistelrooy (Madrid)

11-09-06_1_ds__1109_pag_29_nistelrooy_1.jpg
Van the Man was on song for Madrid with a wonderful hattrick. Although his old club doesn’t seem to be missing him, Madrid fans have taken a liking to him already. Doesn’t look like a false dawn for Madrid, but bigger tests ensue in the league season.

Verdict:

xin_3908032611337141828112.jpg

Early days yet. But Sevilla look very strong and may make me regret not tipping them as serious contenders. They beat Sociedad away with a 3-1 scoreline. That puts them top of liga. Solid team, despite so many high profile departures in the last few years. Madrid’s revival is on the cards and Becks and Ruud connecting to good effect was a pleasant sight for forlorn Madrid fans, who have been starved of good football for the last three years.

US Open: A Review

Posted by Sports Snob on September 12, 2006

US Open is my second most favourite grandslam (I think most people’s). It is by far the most vociferous slam, the glamour of tennis in New york and under lights as opposed to the quiet applause on the green lawns (except Henman hill of course) of Wimbledon, has a unique appeal. US Open has got spirit and it keeps the audience entertained something rarely seen on the dusty clay of Roland Garros. you have Spaniards all over the place and the tennis is a slug-fest, the matches are rarely, if ever, enthralling. The Australian Open: less glamorous than the Big Apple but it is good fun to watch and most importantly, rain is kept at bay and the indoor tennis is awesome (that king of indoor tennis, Becker performed ever so well when the roof was closed). But, for sheer entertainment, the US Open is unparallelled.

This year’s Open is over and it was great entertainment. The familiar sights of Roger Federer holding the trophy aloft and Martina Navratilova saying she’s done with the game; the media being more interested in the banana than in the wonderful tennis that Sharapova was playing; another Brit failing; Roddick hitting his powerful serves. They are good times, when the grandslams are on.

mariasharapova.jpgrogerfederer.jpgpaes.jpg

Federer is on a different plane. It’s like what Chang said about Sampras when at his peak: The guy is from a different planet. Sharapova, it is intimidating enough when someone plays tennis that well; couple that with the way she looks and you wonder if the world is a fair place :). Paes has won after a long time. He is older, slower but you can see the passion, emotion and love for the game. Indian tennis owes him a lot; Indian sports in general does. He is the only superstar we have had in individual, truly global sports (other than Anand).

agassi.jpg

Agassi has retired. I still can’t believe it! It doesn’t seem like very long ago when I saw a tremendous four-set display in the US Open. Two old men standing across the net from each other and showing the world how tennis is supposed to be played. If there had been no tie-breakers, they would till be playing set 1. The level of tennis on display that night, I am yet to see again (I doubt I will). That man is now gone: the rebel, the rival, the champion, the old man of the game.

davenport.jpgnavratilova.jpg

Navratilova is gone. I can’t say enough about her contribution to the sport. Her best tennis years were long over by the time I was an avid watcher. But at fifty she plays the game better than some of the divas of the modern game. Davenport will probably not play again. She was a good player and was one of the original powerful hitters in the women’s game. She won more than I thought she would.

nadal.jpg

There were a few upsets: Baghdatis, Nadal, Nalbandian, the Williams sisters, Andy Murray. The new video challenge, a good addition I think. But on the whole, it was a great tournament and no one can debate it when I say, the best players won.

safina.jpgmurray.jpghewitt.jpg

Now, it’s a long wait for the next grandslam, early next year. Let’s see how the draw pans out, new stars, old stars, whether the Federer phenomenon continues, whether Mauresmo is really a choker, will Andy Murray be a phenomenon, will Safina do things that Safin has failed to, will Safin make a comeback, what is happening to Hewitt… waiting for Australian Open 2007.

Maria, Queen of Hearts

Posted by Sports Snob on September 10, 2006

sharapova.jpg

A striking figure standing across the diminutive Henin, dressed in black,a lovely chain around the neck, black hair-clips in place and the hair being tucked behind the ears every two points and squeals after every shot and fist-pumping!!! Maria Sharapova has won her second GrandSlam. And what a victory it was; Henin never really had a chance.

She started off playing nervously but once she was set in her groove, there was absolutely no chance for Henin. Henin didn’t play the tennis she is capable of but I don’t think it would have mattered much today.

Sharapova was inch perfect, brilliant power-hitting. She was kissing the lines, hitting deep shots and moving Henin all around the court. Sharapova was serving at her best and hitting that inside out forehand perfectly. The match was hers to win or lose. And after disappointments in her last two years, she has proved to us, she is no one-slam wonder.

Maria burst on to the scene when people had written off that diva, Kournikova. She came out and showed us she wasn’t just another pretty pair of legs. I mean, to beat Serena at Wimbledon, playing the way she did! There was ambition, determination and hers was a story the crowd loved: the six-year old with her non-English speaking father, out in a country where they knew no one and all they had was her talent!
She is absolutely gorgeous, carries herself very well and yes, she grunts but then it is very easy for the crowds to forgive her for that (easy for me to, definitely!!). After the match today, she went off-court for a few minutes and got her phone, and ‘told her Mom to start breathing again’.

It is heart-warming to see her succeed. She is going to be around for a while and fans, sponsors and tournament organizers world-over are going to be praying for her success. ‘Maria, you have won our hearts!’

Martina

martina2.jpg

What do you say about this woman? She been everywhere, won everything there is to win, retired, come back and competed against players about twenty years younger… and she has won, again. How does she do it? No one knows. Where does the motivation to carry on come from? And the fitness…? She might not be as sharp or fast but then she can still win.

Martina retires, again. And finally, the career is over… it is, isn’t it?
