FIBA World Championship 2006

Posted by Sports Snob on August 27, 2006

The World Championships has drawn greater viewership this year than in the past. This maybe due to the star studded roster of Team USA, but even they are wary of the threat posed by the international teams. A sentiment echoed by Jerry Colangelo, head of USA Basketball. ”We invented the game , we sent our players and our coaches out to teach the world and now they’re closing the gap,” Colangelo said. ”They got better and better, we didn’t take care of business and they knocked us off our perch.”. Team USA had finished 3rd in the 2004 Olympics, a disgrace considering that USA had Vince Carter, Allen Iverson and a swarm of other 20million $ per year athletes. Now they are back with a vengeance. They have been practising hard and are committed to winning the crown this year.

Better Competition

Unlike the past, teams like Argentina (2004 Olympic Champions with Manu Ginobili) and Spain ( Pau Gasol and a stinging defense) have very strong squads and team USA has to be on top of their game to beat them. I would still put my money on the Americans to win it all this year with Argentina or Spain finshing second. These teams have strong fundamentals and play defense with passion. Explosive Offense can win a game but it takes strong defense to win a championship. These International teams have shown their talent in shooting the ball as well as in playing defense. The Americans have a physical advantage amongst all teams, something related to genetics I guess, but International teams are smart and have excellent coordination.

China has failed to amaze anyone so far into the competition, despite Yao Ming being the top scorer of the championship. Angola has shown a lot of promise. They have the heart but unfortunately not the talent to compete with the big guns.

USA – Germany quarterfinals looks imminent and it would be a great match. To date Dirk Nowitzki has been a matchup problem to all teams, look for the zone defense against the Germans. France was shaping to be a strong contender until Tony Parker was injured in an exhibition game and had to be pulled out of the roster.

Look out for the finals and throw your predictions in here. At last basketball is having a world championship with competition.
My Picks: 1.USA 2.Argentina 3. Spain 4. Greece

At last a post on basketball. Despite an all star roster, I dont think the Americans will be able to blow by any of the top 4 teams in the world. You said it right, defense and teamwork are the key elements to win the championship. I would still pick USA to win it, but not by a double digit margin of victory in the finals. Spain would be my next choice. Pau Gasol’s team looks well rounded and could beat the Argentinians in the semi-finals.

I was able to catch a few FIBA games on tv this weekend and have to accept that USA could face stiff competition. Right now I think that USA may not win this competition. They are playing a lot of individual basketball. The reason they are able to win games is pure talent. Something which they have in abundance. But I will still hold on to my predictions and we shall look forward to the rest.

Its good to see the end of U.S. dominance. I remember how Barkley barked during the Barcelona or the Atlanta Olympics that the only way any other team could win the gold medal was by getting into their room and stealing it. Also, the Dream Team caused a lot of animosity within the U.S. Olympics team..they got chauffered limousines and five star accomodation while the teams from the other sports got buses and had to stay at the village.

i guess now the US know how the English feel at not being the world champs at every darn sport they have ever invented… england are world champs at rugby, but not for long i suspect

US had taken basketball for granted and the opinion of Jerry Colangelo summed it up. NBA players had to be given chauffered limousines and five star accomodation, since none of them were interested in playing the game during their vacation period. Not that they werent patriotic or anything, it was just the fact that there had been no competition. Now things have changed and the Americans have a different attitude. I havent heard of the US team practising for the olympics as they had done before this tournament and they have established a division to control USA basketball with strict schedules and practices. Something which is great to see..

  6. Okay..wonder what C2 thinks of this! But Greece defeated U.S. 101-95.

whoa. i wud definately have not guessed this one.. my top 4 picks came thru but had major role reversals.. Not only did the US lose, so did argentina.. which brings a finals between spain and greece with the bronze medal game between USA and Argentina.. Well this is basketball at its best.. Look out America…
